The Green Ghana Day was launched by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2021 under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, as part of an aggressive afforestation and reforestation agenda of the government.
The Green Ghana Initiative seeks to create a collective action towards the restoration of degraded landscapes in the country, mitigate climate change and inculcate in the youth the values of planting and nurturing trees and their associated benefits.
The Initiative is aimed at planting trees as part of an annual campaign to save forests in Ghana that have been depleted by climate change and illegal mining. This year’s celebration was held on Friday, June 9, 2023, with the theme: “Our Forests, Our Health”, with a target to plant 10 million trees.
The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture as part of efforts to support the initiative also planted trees in its environs to mark the day.
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Mark Okraku Mantey led the activity and was supported by the Special Advisor to the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Nana Osafo Kantanka I, the Chief Director at the Ministry, Mr John Yao Agbeko, Directors in charge of Human Resource, Finance and Administration and Planning Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr Vittus Otto Langmagne, Mr Kofi Benning and Mr Geoffrey Tamakloe and other staff of the Ministry.
