A delegation from Ghana, led by Hon. Mark Okraku Mantey, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture is participating in the ongoing 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee being held in New Delhi, India. The Session is scheduled for 21st to 31st July 2024.
The State of Conservation of Ghana’s Forts and Castles under the World Heritage Properties will be examined at this session and a decision adopted on what the country needs to do to ensure the effective management of the properties.
The World Heritage Committee meets once a year and consists of twenty-one representatives from the States Parties to the Convention elected by their General Assembly.
The Committee is responsible for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, defines the use of the World Heritage Fund, and allocates financial assistance upon requests from States Parties. It has the final say on whether a property is inscribed on the World Heritage List or not. It examines reports on the state of conservation of inscribed properties and asks States Parties to take action when properties are not being professionally managed. It also decides on the inscription or deletion of properties on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
